I was recently involved in a discussion about the power of great lyrics in musical expression. In an AI era where there are endless bland songs churned out daily, the art of writing provocative, inspiring lyrics is more important than ever. My beef with a lot of AI input is that it’s essentially lazy and creates dumbed-down content.
Some of my favourite songs use great lyrics in songs to engage a listener
Below are some of what I consider to be really well crafted and performed songs, with sharp lyrics and great expression. The expression is crucial to really communicate the message in the lyrical content. The following three songs are superb examples of lyrics and delivery that grab the attention and take the listner to a different place. I’d love to have written these songs

The creative process in writing
Many years ago my good friend Tim Booth, leader singer of James, shared with me his strategy for writing lyrics, and I’ve been using it ever since! Crucially its important to listen to the rhythm and feel of the music. These elements then inspire lyrical expression. That’s what makes for a great song. The lyrics are for me a key element in connecting with an audience and my good friend Martin Simpson has also been a massive influence on helping me develop songwriting skills.
Similarly, my brilliant, longstanding vocal coach Agi has been crucial in developing my expression when creating tracks. I’m proud of the albums I’ve created to date over the last decade. Special thanks to all the musicians who have contributed, directly and indirectly, to making this material manifest, and to my brilliant producer, Carl, who brings it all to life! Here are two of my favorite tracks, I’ve recorded to date
