I have long been a fan of Thomastik strings for acoustic guitars, but have only recently tried their Thomastik-Infeld CF-27 Flat Wound 3rd C Ukulele String and Thomastik-Infeld CF-30 Flat Wound Low G Ukulele String for ukuleles. These are of course wound guitar strings that can be used on a tenor ukulele. Previously I have found Hilos and Freemont low Gs to be an excellent combination, but now I think I have found the best string combination for live work.
One of the challenges in getting a great sound with a ukulele is the combination of instrument and strings. I’ve explored all sorts of combinations. Its obvious that some sound combinations to my ears sound much better than others. The Thomastik-Infeld Wound Ukulele Strings are sonically superb in terms of play ability and sound. The best test for this is at live gigs and last Friday the combination of Thomastik-Infeld Wound G and C Ukulele Strings proved to be excellent. They are looser than Freemonts which are also excellent. Its also useful to have a uniform wound G and C. With The Small Change Diaries and The Caravan of Dreams I need an instrument that can really kick out a big sound and along with Hilos the Thomastik-Infeld Wound Ukulele Strings do this in spades.
The only snag is that these are almost impossible to get hold of, and some may consider them to be too expensive. Personally for me its all about the sound and a great uke with Thomastik-Infeld Wound Ukulele Strings, a lava cable and a Henriksen Bud create the best possible sound to my ears, so why settle for anything less?
