I’m a longstanding fan of listening to great audio and last year ventured back into exploring vinyl, by purchasing a Michell record deck.

Although I had a substantial audio system at the time, I didn’t have a great phono stage to get the most out of the turntable. I heard Michell was making their own unit and decided to wait for it to become available to the public.

Finally, a month ago, I managed to get my hands on the new Michell Apollo and Muse units. These units require a correct setup to ensure that they work with my Lexicon MC 10, and the Michell cartridge needs proper alignment. Fortunately, Alan from Seven Oaks in Leeds was the guy to sort this out, and both he and Richard Meadmore introduced me to a whole new sonic realm of listening.

The Michell Apollo in action

I’ve been listening to a wide range of albums, from Mobile Fidelity jazz to some great Daniel Lanois-produced albums and everything in between. I’m also very familiar with many audio mediums, including everything from Japanese SACDS (the emerald green ones you never see outside Japan), high resolution files, CDS, and just about every medium out there! The Michell Apollo brings out a whole new level of detail that is quite astonishing.

It’s like upgrading your TV from HD to 4K resolution; everything is massively enhanced. Crucially, this makes for a super listening experience. To say that I’m impressed would be an understatement. With many albums, it’s like having the artist in the actual room. I am very demanding in music production, both on my releases and what I choose to listen to. Michell has created a unit that is beyond exceptional and will bring joy to those music lovers who want the best musical experience.
